April 2006

A bunch of hardy Arctic fools left London Heathrow bound for Moscow. A few beers were drunk to get over the shock of the excess luggage charges. SCUBA gear and all those thermal under suits weigh a lot you know!

A flight to Moscow and a night in the Cosmos Hotel was followed by a bit of a tour of Red Square and the Kremlin.

Keith and St Basil's Cathedral in Red Square.

Tomb of the unknown soldier.

To get to the dive centre we had a 28 hour,
yes 28 hour train journey to the frozen
north via St Petersburg.

Great accommodation deep in the forest.

Usual transport out to the dive sites on the ice sheet.

I was upside down when I took this photo of Adam
emerging back out of the mina (ice hole).
We were having a go at under ice skiing.
Upside down under the ice. (think about it)
Air trapped in a frozen over Mina.

Our trip our to the ice was awesome.

Adam doesn't like the idea of that deep dark hole.

Chris makes his first dive with Dima
(our instructor on the PADI Ice Diver Speciality)

Each diving buddy pair always
has a tender on the surface.

Adam.

Chris.

Sunset just before our night dive
under the ice!

Beroe cucumis comb jelly.

Man's best friend.

Inside Shed No 3 where we kitted up out of the cold.

Metridium senille sea anemonie.

Suicidal spider crab.

The Ice Diver course students and Dima.

The full DLL group just before we left for a drunken
journey back to Moscow. Yes, 28 hours on that train again.
